Outback's Outpost 'SCRAP IRON' By Mitchell Smith!
Welcome to the Outpost. Today I’m diving into one of the greatest Cobra characters, Scrap Iron. What a great design he was. So great that most of the upgrades were just the original design with different color schemes. The original figure is classic Cobra blue with red highlight. He also has one of the coolest missile launchers for any G.I.Joe or Cobra. He was a staple in the cartoon, even though I don’t remember any episodes that revolved around him, he was always ready to fight for his team.

I didn’t have this one as a kid but guess who did? That’s right my older brother (you may start to see a pattern here.) As usual though he was pretty good at sharing so I got my fair share of play time with Scrap Iron. He was my favorite Cobra until Tomax and Xamot came along, but the three of them looked great together and I had many adventures with them as a kid. He had a few modern day upgrades but still the same awesome classic design.

This one is in my top ten characters and I’m glad I had a chance to create many memories with him. Who else loves Scrap Iron? Sound off below and let us know! Make sure to check back for our next discussion.

Great post! And I love how "the capsule" was a rock the kids found in the creek/stream. lol Only funnier, because that was no doubt a staged set.

Yes he was very cool. Interesting the prototype Scrap-Iron had a wide open shirt. The production figure had a T-Shirt underneath. T-Shirts are important, right Kal?

I loved the little missile launcher and his machine pistol. He could blow stuff up, and shoot any survivors who crawled away...

That was a good eye spotting that. I still find it interesting that they used pre-production models for things back then rather than having the final product to show in the commercials. I wonder what the marketing plan was behind that.

Not sure. Hasbro makes me scratch my head.
But maybe getting studio commercial time was expensive, so they got deals by filming stuff all at once. Mixing pre-production and production items.

Another idea is to get kids hunting for figures not yet available, on purpose. Then they go to the store with $3 hoping for a new figure, but then they end up buying old stock since the new guy is still months away. But the kid needs to get his Joe fix, so he buys whatever is there...

Haha!

"Listen hear sonny, Back in my day, you could wait for Target to run a special.
Joe's could be had for $1.99."

"Now let me tell you something about sales tax..."
'When the sale ad says $1.99 and you go with $2, you aren't a penny ahead. You still owe 12 more cents to the government...."

Man i remember just waiting to scrape up $3 to go get a new joe, it was like the greatest day ever when you got enough to get one.
